Acronyms got you a little confused? It's understandable because things can get a little complicated when you're working in the world of logistics and supply chain. The 21st century has brought mankind many new technological advancements and improvements and that is certainly true for the world of logistics and supply chain management. When it comes to supply chain, it's important to understand what the differences are between CSCP (Certified Supply Chain Professional) and CLTD (Certified in Logistics, Transportation, and Distribution) certifications. Each certification adds tremendous value for its holder and for the company that employs them. In the ever-changing world of logistics, having a resource for education, training, and networking can mean the difference between success and failure.

What's the Difference?

We need to get things straight right from the start. Although the two terms may seem similar, they really are quite different. Let's take a look:

Certified in Logistics, Transportation, and Distribution - CLTD

A separate certification from CSCP, the Certification in Logistics, Transportation, and Distribution (CLTD) deals exclusively with moving parts and pieces from Point A to Point B. This certification is focused on the movement of materials as individual workpieces sourced from vendors through to receipt of those items by the production plant and storage of those items. But it goes further than that as it also entails the transportation of finished goods to the distribution point or the consumer. This discipline is focused on getting everything where it needs to be on time, undamaged, and ready to go. You will be a part of the team involved in:

  • Inventory Management
  • Warehouse Management
  • Capacity Planning
  • Demand Management
  • Order Management
  • Sustainability
  • Vendor Qualification
  • Logistics Network Design
  • Logistics Overview and Strategy

Certified Supply Chain Professional - CSCP

This discipline works with every aspect of the supply chain from beginning to end. Knowledge of the complete process from vetting of potential vendors to the organization of materials transport to inventory control of materials upon arrival. From there, the CSCP can manage the process of placing materials into production, placing finished goods back into inventory as completed items, and, finally, the delivery of products to consumers. In other words, this certification provides training from start to finish and everywhere in between. This certification is designed for professionals already in supply chain management who have experience in the job and want to expand their knowledge and career enhancement opportunities.

Which Way To Go

For those interested in a career in logistics and supply chain management, these two certifications carry a lot of weight. Ever since the beginning of the worldwide pandemic, supply chains have undergone extreme changes. Some vendors are gone, some freight companies have disappeared, and some shipping lines have ceased to exist. This meant a complete upheaval in the world of supply chain and the need for professionals who can clean up the mess, make sense out of confusion, and organize a successful effort to reinstate a manageable chain for the supply of needed goods and services. If you're interested and skilled in problem solving then you are just what the industry needs.

Who, Me?

Times have changed and if you're interested in changing with them, then this could be your ticket. Never before have companies been in greater need of organizational experts who can solve their supply and delivery issues and keep their factories in production. Truck drivers, warehouse forklift operators, grocery store clerks, folks already involved in supply chain, and anyone else who has an interest, have a valuable resource available that can help them decide which career path is best. It's called ASCM or the American Society for Supply Chain Management. This organization has been educating and training professionals in supply chain management for over 60 years. They know what they're doing and have helped hundreds of folks get into one of the most fast-paced, dynamic, and challenging careers. It doesn't even take a college degree to get started, just the desire to make a difference.

Why?

Pretty much everyone everywhere depends on the supply chain to provide them with the things they want and need. It's kind of like oxygen; when it's not there, you notice. And when items are needed and they're not there, things can get pretty messy, fast. Here are a few of the industries that count on supply chain managers for their daily operating needs:

  • Hospitals and Healthcare
  • Military
  • Manufacturers
  • Education
  • Freight and Transportation
  • Travel and Leisure
  • Distribution Centers
  • And hundreds more!

It's All About Lifestyle

Everyone wants to hold a position that is respected, important, and well-paid. That is exactly what supply chain management and logistics management are all about. If you think about it, what other career path can take you anywhere, anytime, for anything? You can plan your future and decide where you wish to work, whom you wish to work for, and under what conditions you wish to work. All over planet Earth, manufacturers, government offices, and thousands of others need qualified, competent supply chain professionals to acquire what they need to keep functioning. From Australia to Austria and from Antarctica to Alaska, the demand is there for educated, capable, professionals ready to get to work. The salaries are good and the training can take your career to places you never thought you'd go.
