Earth Day is often viewed as a symbolic moment—a reminder to reflect on our relationship with the planet. But for supply chain leaders, especially here along the Houston Gulf Coast, Earth Day represents something more operational and far more urgent: a strategic checkpoint.

Houston sits at a rare intersection of industry, energy, logistics, and nature. Home to the Port of Houston—one of the busiest ports in the United States—we also steward an extraordinary natural ecosystem of wetlands, bayous, and coastal habitats. These systems don’t just coexist; they are deeply interconnected. And today, both are under pressure.

Nature as Infrastructure: The Overlooked Link in Supply Chain Resilience

Our coastal wetlands are often described as scenic or environmental assets, but in reality, they function as critical infrastructure. They absorb storm surge, reduce flood risk, support biodiversity, and sustain industries such as fishing, tourism, and marine transportation.

From a supply chain perspective, wetlands perform the same function as buffers, redundancies, and shock absorbers in our networks. They enhance resilience, protect continuity, and reduce systemic risk. When these ecosystems are weakened, our supply chains feel the impact—often in the form of disruptions, downtime, and increased costs.

Protecting natural infrastructure is no longer separate from business strategy. It is central to long-term operational resilience.
